Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development

The town of Eberswalde on the doorsteps of the city of Berlin can look back at a long tradition of forestry and wood science research. In 1992, the University of Applied Sciences in Eberswalde was established on these grounds. With about 2000 students and 70 academic staff it is the State of Brandenburg's smallest university of applied sciences. By now, 17 study programmes have been developed which have shaped the university's profile as a place of genuine commitment to the concept of sustainable management. It is Germany's only university which brings together different disciplines that relate to the rural area, i.e. forestry, landscape management and nature conservation, organic farming, wood science and technology, regional management and tourism. These attractive programmes lure students from all over Germany and abroad to Eberswalde.

Main Research

Research at the HNEE is firmly connected with the principles of sustainability. The research is focused in the two research areas of the university:

- Priority 1: Sustainable Rural Development

- Priority 2: Sustainable production, processing and process engineering of materials and products based on natural materials

The focal points of research at the university are:

- Application-oriented, forest-related research in the sense of a holistic ecosystem management

- Analyses of biomass potentials and the production of renewable energy from forestry and agriculture

- Nature conservation, climate change and climate protection

- Sustainable Education, Environmental Education

- Organic Farming and Marketing

- Sustainable Tourism

- Sustainable economy and enterprise development

- Deployment, customization and optimization of the raw material volume from agriculture and forestry

- Basic research and development of wood materials and wood analogs

- Technical-oriented product and process development along company value chains

- Applied technical adjustments of production processes, with particular respect to computer-based systems

Relevant current projects at the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde are for example:

- elan - Developing an integrated land management scheme for sustainable use of water, nutrients and carbon in North-East Germany

- Optimization of tree cultivation in agriculture and forestry with the help of ZIM Plant Technology Systems in regard to climate change and bioenergy
